The roots of the Lowland Pipers lie in the town of
Turnhout, in the North of Belgium. Back in 1963 some members of a local Boy
Scouts troup, called Sint Joris (St George), decided to start their own Pipe
Band and called it the "Sint joris Scouts Pipe Band".
In the course of the years this rather archaic name was changed to THE
LOWLAND PIPERS
In their almost 50 years of existence the Pipe Band had an eventful time
with, as usual, many ups and downs, coming away stronger. There was glory at
competitions and acknowledgement at home and abroad.
The Lowland Pipers wear the Stewart tartan and therefore it was a great
honor that the Stewart Society officially adopted the Lowland Pipers in
1997.
Currently the pipe band can boast a fair number of active players and at the
same time a number of trainees are anxious to join the actives.
After the changes at the beginning of the year the leadership of the pipe
band is now conducted by Pipe Major Jimmy Devolder and Leading Drummer Nicky
Raus.
